Anyway, new icon! Because there are a million OTHER things I should be doing.
Couple of things I did to go on the wall in this picture by Aly. There was a 3rd one to the set, but gosh it was ugly.
Drawing stuff like this is really relaxing. lol It’s a challenge too.
I’ve always found it’s tough to get as invested in drawing the scenery as you do when drawing people. I think it’s the lack of a face or eyes that makes it feel alien and not as alive as the characters could be, so you have to rely on other things like color theory and composition to get them to look good. Color theory and composition are pretty difficult things to grasp though, unless you’re super-serious about drawing…
I agree! Drawing backgrounds is a lot more difficult for me to for all the same reasons. Rendering a person with hair and eyes and clothes is a lot more entertaining. My other biggest struggle is after spending so much time on the characters, I’m bored by the time I get to the background. xD Or vise-versa. Maybe at some point I can learn to better blend the two, but it -feels- like working on two large pictures instead of one and I’m notoriously lazy.
Colour theory and composition are important for artwork with characters too and they are certainly weak points of mine. So! Doing these sorts of background shots is really educating and rewarding. Plus they are just fun. Thinking about leaves or branches instead of hair. xD
I’d say one of the best ways to go about making a background and a character at the same time is to think way back in the sketching stages. We already have “Who is this character, what do they look like” in mind, but we also have to think about “Where are they, and what are they doing?” if we want to put a meaningful background into it. It’s something I still struggle with sometimes, but for my more serious stuff I’ve been trying my best to think about all four of those things before I put pencil to paper :>
And don’t worry too much, because what you’re doing right now is pretty good! I probably couldn’t draw snow the way you do (probably because snow is a Magical Mysterious Thing to me, haha) so you’re on the right track :D
